Union-Liberty Square

Formerly crossed by Milkov River’s tributary streams, the Union Square guarded along the time the main landmark set by Stephen the Great in 1475. Despite continuous changes from customs to a cultural area, the present Central Square remains both as a proof of the old territorial boundary between the two historical regions (Moldavia and Wallachia) and a tourist location and public activity, sprinkled with major cultural monuments and administrative areas of the city, transforming the center of the city into a real public place of nowadays.
Among the existent buildings we can mention: the Popular Athenaeum ”Mh. Gh. Pastia”, the Central Obelisk, the Church ”Sf. Ioan Botezătorul” (Saint John the Baptist) and the unified buildings belonging to the City Hall and Prefecture.
A genuine witness of the past, the Central Square witnessed numerous important events of great importance to the country's history, among which we can mention: 1821, when the Hetaerists made an oath of allegiance in their fight against the Turks on their way to Bucharest, June 20, 1848, moment of celebration June 11, 1848 (for signing the Proclamation of Islaz) and burning in the Organic Regulations in the Square, the moment the people living in Focşani Moldoveni joined the crowd.
Formerly, Focsani was a border crossing point between the two realms, the central area witnessed the actions which took place between 1859- 1862, during which both Focsani and central area contributed to the peak of the unionist call.
Among these important events related to the central area we can identify the well-known visit of Prince Al. Ioan Cuza (central figure in the pantheon of personalities from Focsani), who inspired countless stories and legends, among which we have the story recorded by the Magistrates Fund Focsani, in which the famous ruler "Reaching the boundaries he calls the two soldiers, Moldavian and Wallachian, who were guarding the country and tells them that they are brothers and ask them to embrace, and to go to the barracks; this way, the ruler canceled the boundaries of Focsani. Accompanied by important personalities of the city, Cuza walked to "the Bridge of Stone", where he danced together with the people the well-known "Hora Unirii" (Hora of Unity) (pg.162 - Focşanii- A history consisting of data and testimonies by Cezar Cherciu) and legendary kiss on the cheek offered by the ruler as a symbol of friendship to the old man Ion Roată (another significant personality of that period) when he was spat at by a nobleman
All these events, which took place in Focsani, had a particular importance for the feelings of the local architects, writers and artists; their efforts culminating in a veritable expression of the national spirit dictated by local events. This is why, one of the most representative monuments of today’s national spirit exists in the Central Square where one can witness the famous "Hora Unirii" (Hora of Unity) achieved by Cuza.
