The Armenian ”Sf. Gheorghe” Church (“St. George”)

An important religious monument, “Sf. Gheorghe” church belongs to the Gregorian Cult and was built in the 18th century by the Armenian community in Focșani. The building was built on the ruins of the old wooden church from 1600 and its presence was attested from a documentary point a view by the notations from 7245 (1738) June, the 20th. This document presents the purchase act, by which Ioniță Captain Țoca, sold to Master Gaşpan and to the entire Armenian community the construction site for the church. The map made by the Austrians in 1789 presented this building as incomplete.
Structurally “the church is built in Brâncoveanu style and preserves the ship-shaped plan with porch, narthex, nave and altar. The porch shows the trilo arches resting on octagonal columns of masonry. The door and windows are decorated with stone carvings and sculpted vegetal decor. Originally, the church had two octagonal towers on the narthex and nave, erected by brick on square bases.” (National Cultural Heritage built in Vrancea County – Museum of Vrancea).
